Knowing how to repair flood damaged drywall starts with recognizing that a dry-looking wall is not necessarily a safe or stable wall. But reinstalling drywall over wet framing, leaving compromised insulation inside a wall, or painting over early mold growth can create a much larger repair later. Start With Safety and Water Classification
Before touching drywall, make sure the property is safe to enter. Shut off electrical power to affected areas if water reached outlets, switches, appliances, or wiring. Ceiling drywall deserves special attention. If it sagged, softened, or was exposed to contaminated water, remove it. A flooded ceiling can fail without warning, and its framing cavity may trap moisture above the visible surface.
When Drywall May Be Saved
There are limited exceptions. A small amount of clean water from a quickly repaired supply-line leak may not require full wall removal if the drywall was minimally affected, drying began immediately, and moisture readings confirm the wall cavity and materials are dry. There should be no swelling, staining, odor, softness, or mold.
That is a narrow scenario. Floodwater that entered a basement or traveled through multiple rooms is not the time to rely on surface appearance. Replacement is usually the more dependable decision.
Dry the Structure, Not Just the Room
After damaged drywall and insulation are removed, dry the exposed framing and subfloor thoroughly. Use commercial-grade air movers and dehumidifiers sized for the space. Keep windows and exterior doors closed when outdoor humidity is high, since bringing humid air inside can slow the process.

Rebuild With the Right Materials and Sequencing

In below-grade areas with a history of moisture, the wall assembly may need a more moisture-tolerant design than the original construction.
